At Design Interviews

Interview with Seyed Behrad Ghodsi : Frank Scott: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?. Seyed Behrad Ghodsi : As a designer I believe we have to be curious about new technology and see how we can apply it into our design to improve the user experience. Based on user needs and the potential that I find in 3D printing technology as a manufacturing method, I started to design a series of ergonomic and stylish 3D-printed footwear. .Frank Scott: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?. Seyed Behrad Ghodsi : Atossa started as an idea for redesigning industrial and social systems that deliver the products to us. I thought of getting the advantages of 3D print technology to develop customized products. My goals have been minimizing the waste of matter and energy and increasing people’s involvement in the design process. The strategy is to design based on every individual’s needs in order to provide them with the most appropriate product, which is unique to them. I believe participatory design is the future for design. .Frank Scott: What are your future plans for this award winning design?. Seyed Behrad Ghodsi : I consider this award a platform to introduce the product around the globe. I'd also like to take this opportunity to promote my design through companies and designers. .Frank Scott: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?. Seyed Behrad Ghodsi : The design development process took approximately 1 year from the initial idea through to production. .Frank Scott: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?. Seyed Behrad Ghodsi :
I believe 3D Printing is the future of manufacturing. It reduces the cost, energy and also it would be a good solution for the environmental problems. So I thought it would be a good idea to consider these benefits in my design. The idea of the design is originated from me but many others helped deliver the concept. .Frank Scott: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?. Seyed Behrad Ghodsi : I currently plan to sell the product to any interested company or lease the rights of it with a business plan. .Frank Scott: What made you design this particular type of work?. Seyed Behrad Ghodsi : Lack of user customization in the shoe ergonomics would result in many dissatisfactions and sometimes diseases. Atossa embraces every foot’s unique form and shapes itself accordingly. I’m looking for new types of customization, something more than just changing the colors or some small details! .Frank Scott: Who is the target customer for his design?. Seyed Behrad Ghodsi : People with passion and sensibility for fashion and technology and also those who are looking for new types of customization for footwear and specifically for high heels! .Frank Scott: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?. Seyed Behrad Ghodsi : I was looking for a feminine name from ancient cultures and I came up with Atossa. Atossa is the name of a well known queen in Ancient Persia, who is the daughter of Cyrus the great. Atossa means graceful, powerful and capable. .Frank Scott: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?. Seyed Behrad Ghodsi : Sketching in 2D, 3D modelling In Autodesk 3ds Max and 3D printing with Makerbot Replicator 2X and Fifth Generation .Frank Scott: What is the most unique aspect of your design?. Seyed Behrad Ghodsi : Atossa has the ability to be unique and ergonomics with the minimum cost. If you want to get these features and customize your shoe design with common production, you’ll end up paying a lot of money! So by Atossa, you can have your own custom designed shoe with a low cost. .Frank Scott: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?. Seyed Behrad Ghodsi : We worked with 3D Printing technicians, Electrical Engineers, 3D Printing materials experts and human factor experts. .Frank Scott: What is the role of technology in this particular design?. Seyed Behrad Ghodsi : Basically the most important point of this project was about the new technology and the ways I have applied it to my design! So this project was impossible without using new technology and specifically 3D printing Technology! .Frank Scott: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?. Seyed Behrad Ghodsi : At that point limitation of materials was my biggest challenge. Also 3D printing is a time consuming process and it was a challenge as well. .Frank Scott: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?. Seyed Behrad Ghodsi : It is a way to get more recognition and a larger exposure of our design and brand. .Frank Scott: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?. Seyed Behrad Ghodsi : Atossa is made by PLA. PLA is a bio-material and because it is obtained out of natural resources such as corn, potatoes or sugar beets, it is acknowledged as “earth friendly”. Also this material is 100% recyclable so we can recycle it for several times and 3D print new shoes with the same material! .
