Natalie Musorina-Torsion Rocking Chair

At Design Interviews

Interview with Natalie Musorina : Frank Scott: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?. Natalie Musorina : This chair was created under impression of wonderful sculptures of Naum Gabo. As his works it is investigation and manipulation of space and also an eye-catching object, like a sculpture. The chair induces to explore it, look at it from every side and through it. But furthermore, it also has a function and can be used in everyday life with a great comfort. .Frank Scott: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?. Natalie Musorina : During work on the chair I was concentrated on the principles for minimum-weight design. I wanted to create construction which would be able to sustain a weght of sitting person but at the same time would look imponderable and requires a minimum quantity of material. .Frank Scott: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?. Natalie Musorina : About half a year. .Frank Scott: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?. Natalie Musorina : I would like to sell or lease the production rights. .Frank Scott: What made you design this particular type of work?. Natalie Musorina : Since I saw Naum Gabo's sculpture "Linear Construction No. 2" I could not to make away with desire to create a chair in similar style. So the chair "Torsion" is an incarnation of such desire. .Frank Scott: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?. Natalie Musorina : During designing I also studied Santiago Calatrava's bridges. I think, it also influenced the chair. .Frank Scott: Who is the target customer for his design?. Natalie Musorina : I suppose it is upper middle class consumers. .Frank Scott: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?. Natalie Musorina : In the the last century there was a theory about special kind of physical field called "torsion" which is created by space rotation. This theory was recognized as untenable and pseudoscientific, but I thought that the form of the chair is also created as a space rotation in some way although there are no Maxwell's equations so it should be interesting to name the chair like it. .Frank Scott: What is the most unique aspect of your design?. Natalie Musorina : I think it is the form of the frame. .Frank Scott: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?. Natalie Musorina : I did everything by myself. .Frank Scott: What is the role of technology in this particular design?. Natalie Musorina : I do not think there is a new technology. But I used some geometrical concepts while designing the form of surface, if it is matter. .Frank Scott: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?. Natalie Musorina : The main creative challenge was to find the right proportions of frame. There was so many things should be taken into account like the average man's knee high, the average distance from the seat and waist of sitting person and so on. And because all parts of the chair depend on each other it was difficult but also interesting to find the optimal decision to bring to conformity with all that factors. .
