Interview with Tom Kerpert : Frank Scott: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?. Tom Kerpert : The idea and inspiration was to provide a comfortable "cave"for the animal .Frank Scott: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?. Tom Kerpert : The kennel had to be inviting to the animal and had to provide a comfortable and save environment and protection from the element. At the same time portability and ease of maintenance where key concerns. .Frank Scott: What are your future plans for this award winning design?. Tom Kerpert : My client is actively looking for licensing partners overseas .Frank Scott: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?. Tom Kerpert : The design process took approximately 3 month .Frank Scott: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?. Tom Kerpert : I was commissioned by the client to re-invent the dog kennel. .Frank Scott: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?. Tom Kerpert : The kennel is currently in production in South Africa and licensing is available for overseas markets .Frank Scott: What made you design this particular type of work?. Tom Kerpert : Being a dog owner myself I was unable to find a suitable kennel on the market .Frank Scott: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?. Tom Kerpert : This design was completely created in-house from concept to final parts .Frank Scott: Who is the target customer for his design?. Tom Kerpert : Any dog owner around the world .Frank Scott: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?. Tom Kerpert : The kennel can easily be assembled or dismantled for transport. In addition the roof can be removed without tools for cleaning and maintenance. The double wall design delivers excellent insulation from low and high temperatures. A future upgrade to underfloor heating by filling the base tray with water and insertion of a low voltage element has been kept in mind during the initial design process. .Frank Scott: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?. Tom Kerpert : All work was done by 3D modelling software .Frank Scott: What is the most unique aspect of your design?. Tom Kerpert : The potential upgrade to underfloor heating in colder climates .Frank Scott: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?. Tom Kerpert : All design and engineering was done in-house. .Frank Scott: What is the role of technology in this particular design?. Tom Kerpert : Rota-molding was chosen to manufacture this design at an early stage in the design process and the design was optimized for this particular process .Frank Scott: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?. Tom Kerpert : I thought the concept was unique and this was an opportunity to present it to a wider audience .
